Message When Updating Quicken: A patching engine error has occurred

Updated: 8/13/2012 | Article ID: GEN81997

There are several different situations which may cause this error to occur.

  • Quicken may be installed on the root of a drive (e.g. C:\).
  • Your Windows Temp folder may be too large
  • A running application may be conflicting with the update process.
  • The Quicken installation may be damaged.

Check the Quicken installation location

If Quicken is installed to the root of a drive, the patching engine error may occur. The following procedure shows you how to determine where Quicken is installed.

  1. Right-click the icon you use to start Quicken and select Properties.
  2. In the Target field, verify that Quicken is installed to a folder.
    • For example, C:\Program Files\Quicken\qw.exe is in a folder, no changes are needed. Continue to the next section.
    • If the target is C:\ or other drive letter without a folder, reinstall Quicken to a folder on your hard drive. Information about reinstalling Quicken is available on our support site.
  3. Open Quicken and apply the patch.

Empty the Windows Temp Folder

The Quicken patch uses the Windows Temp folder during installation. If your Temp folder is large, the patch may not be able to locate the files needed to complete the patch process. The following procedure shows you how to empty your Temp folder.

  1. Exit Quicken.
  2. Right-click on the Windows Start button and then choose Explore.
  3. Right-click your Local Disk C: drive and select Properties.
  4. On the General tab, select Disk Cleanup. It may calculate your free space.
  5. Click the Temporary Files checkbox to place a check in it.
  6. Deselect all other items on the list.
  7. Click OK, and then click Yes to the confirmation prompt.
  8. When Disk Cleanup completes, click OK.
  9. Open Quicken and apply the patch when prompted.
    • If the issue persists, continue to the next section.

Download and apply the manual patch.

If you are updating from within the Quicken program and are receiving errors when installing the patch you should download the patch file and install it with Quicken closed.

  1. Visit the product updates index page and select your version of Quicken.
  2. Click the manual update link.
  3. Download the latest patch file and save it to your Desktop.
  4. Double-click the patch file to apply the patch.
    • If the issue persists, continue to the next section.

A running Application May Be Conflicting With the Update Process

Another program running on the computer may be conflicting with the Quicken patch. The following information shows you how to correct this by applying the patch in Selective Startup.

  1. If you have not already done so, download the manual patch as described in the section above.
  2. Click on Start, choose Run. If you are running Windows 7, place your cursor in the box that reads "Search Programs and Files."
  3. Type "msconfig" (without the quotes and press Enter.
  4. Uncheck "Load Startup Group Items" and press OK.& Restart your computer.
  5. Once your computer restarts, close out of any dialog boxes that may appear, then double-click the patch file to apply the patch.
  6. If the issue persists, continue to the next section. If the problem has been resolved, repeat step 3 and 4. However, in step 4 place the check mark back in next to "Load Startup Group Items."

The Quicken Installation May Be Damaged

If the Quicken installation is damaged, you are likely to receive errors when trying to apply the patch. Uninstall and reinstall Quicken in Selective Startup will ensure a clean install. If you are continuing your troubleshooting from the previous step, uninstall and reinstall Quicken in Selective Startup. Once it has been reinstalled, run the patch file again, then repeat step 3 and 4 of the previous steps. However, in step 4 place the check mark back in next to "Load Startup Group Items."
