Message When Opening Quicken: Quicken Launcher Has Stopped Working

Windows may be creating and/or retaining incorrect Compatibility Mode settings for Quicken.  Try this: 

  1. Right-click the Quicken icon on your Desktop and choose Properties.
  2. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select the checkbox Run this program in Compatibility mode for...
  4. Select the very last Windows selection from the drop-down list (typically Vista SP2).
  5. De-select all other checkboxes on this screen.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Remove the checkmark for Run this program in Compatibility mode for:
  8. Click OK.
  9. Launch Quicken to see if the error no longer occurs.

Possible Cause C:

Windows may have an old Compatibility association with the desktop icon (shortcut) for Quicken.  Try this: 

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Computer.
  2. Double-click the C: drive.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  4. Double-click the Quicken folder.
  5. Double-click QW.exe.

Possible Cause D:

Your Windows User Account doesn't have sufficient permissions to use Quicken.  Try this: 

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Computer.
  2. Double-click the C: drive.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  4. Right click the Quicken folder and choose Properties.
  5. Go to the Security tab.
  6. Click on Administrators.
  7. Click the Advanced button.
  8. Click on Administrators.
  9. Click the Edit button.
  10. Click on Continue.
  11. Click on Administrators.
  12. Put a check in both checkboxes.
  13. Click the Edit button.
  14. Click Continue.
  15. Click the Full Control checkbox and then click OK on each window until all are closed.
  16. Launch Quicken.

Note: You may need to confirm that your Windows User Account belongs to the Administrators policy group.  From the Windows Start button choose Control Panel, click on User Accounts > Change Account Type.
