Attachments Not Backed Up or Restored

Updated: 8/11/2011 | Article ID: GEN82401

This issue affects Quicken 2009.  In Quicken 2010 and newer, attachments are part of the data file.

If the restored data file no longer includes your attachments, there are several possible causes:

You do not have enough space to back up the file and the attachments

When you back up a Quicken data file with attachments, Quicken backs up the data first, and then, if there is room, it backs up the attachments. If there is not room for all of the attachments, none of the attachments are backed up.

    • If you are backing up to your hard drive, consult Windows Help to learn how to make more disk space available.
    • For information about how to add space to a Quicken Online Backup account, on the Backup screen, click Manage my account.

The names of the folder containing the attachment and the restored data file do not match

If the name of the restored data file is not the same as the name of the folder that contains the attachments, follow these steps to restore the attachments:

    1. Restore the file again, but do not open it.
    2. Open the Attach folder located in the same location as the original file.
    3. In the Attach folder, right-click the folder that has the same name as the original file and select Copy.
    4. Right-click a blank area in the same folder and select Paste. Windows pastes the file with the name "Copy of [folder name]."
    5. Right-click the "Copy of [folder name] folder, select Rename, and rename it to match the name of the restored file.
    6. Open the restored file and verify that the attachments are available in the account.

You might also be able to resolve the issue by removing some of the attachments from your Quicken data file, or by making a new year file to reduce the size of your data file.
