What if my bank includes pending transactions in the balance? (Quicken Online)

Updated: 10/30/2009 | Article ID: 6908

Next time you log into your bank's website to review your accounts, take a look at the most recent transactions.

If your bank includes transactions labeled "pending" (or a similar term) on its transaction list, and if the balance includes the amounts from pending transactions, then your RealBalance in Quicken Online won't always be accurate.

For example, some banks include pending transactions in the total and call it your Available Balance.

Can my RealBalance be inaccurate?

Yes. It can be inaccurate only when a transaction is counted twice in Quicken Online. This happens when:

  • Your bank includes the "pending" transaction in the balance they send to us, and
  • You enter the same transaction under Upcoming Transactions. You might be tempted to do that because we can't download your pending transactions into Quicken Online.

For example, suppose you make a $20.00 purchase with your debit card. Your bank might treat the transaction as pending for the first day or so, but decrease your balance by $20.00 immediately.

Because you won't see the actual $20.00 expense listed here in Quicken Online, you might add it under Upcoming Transactions. This means your RealBalance would be artificially lowered by $20.00.

Does this affect the What's Left amount on my Home page, too?

Yes, if the account in question is the primary account that you chose in the Stay on Top of Monthly Bills section of your Home page, then this issue affects your What's Left amount, too.
