The following information about converting your Quicken for Windows files to Quicken for Mac is available in PDF format for easy printing and reference during the conversion process. To download it, click here.
Most Quicken for Windows files can be converted for use on Quicken for Mac. However, because of differences in the operating systems, not all data can be converted. See data that can be converted for more information.
Converting your file is a 3-part process. First you must prepare the Quicken for Windows files, then create QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) files, and finally create a new Quicken file on the Mac and import the QIF files.
Create a new Quicken file on the Mac and import the QIF file
- On the Mac, open Quicken. If a message appears asking you to select a Quicken file to open, click Cancel.
- Select the File menu and select New > File.

- Select New Quicken File and click OK.
- Complete the Create Data File window:
- In the Save As field, enter the name for the data file.
- In the Where field, enter the location where you want to save the file. Intuit suggests saving this file on your desktop.
- Under Quicken categories to use, select the appropriate category.
- Click Create.

- In the New Account Assistant window, click Cancel, and then click Close.
- Insert the CD, DVD, or removable media with the QIF files into the appropriate drive.
- Select the Quicken File menu and select Import > From QIF.
- Navigate to the Security List.QIF file on the CD, DVD, or removable media, and then click Open.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to import the data.
- Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the Accounts.QIF, Categories.QIF, and Transactions.QIF files.
Note: Importing the files separately ensures a successful transfer. However, because of differences in how Windows and Mac handle transactions, you might have to move some transactions to the correct accounts.
