Converting data from Microsoft Money files to Quicken 2008 or earlier

Updated: 10/26/2009 | Article ID: 5521

Notice:

The instructions in this article are for Quicken 2008 or earlier only.  If you are using Quicken 2009 or 2010 please click here.

Quicken 2007/2008

You can import your data from Microsoft Money 2003 (or later) to Quicken 2004 through 2008 for Windows. (You may also be able to import info from Money 2002 or earlier if that version lets you copy .XML files to your Desktop.)

Although the following Money data items cannot be imported, you can always enter them manually after the conversion:

  • Money 2008 files with more than 10,000 transactions. (Not to worry – we're currently working on a free converter, compatible with Quicken 2010. We'll update this article when it becomes available.)
  • Memorized transactions
  • Online account activation information
  • Budgets
  • Loan accounts
  • Planner information
  • Classes
  • Unexercised employee stock option grants
  • Exchange-traded options
  • Empty accounts with no transactions
  • Reconciliation state of your transactions. For this reason, you should reconcile the imported transactions before adding new ones.

Before You Begin

Make sure that:

  • Quicken 2004 (or later) is installed on the same computer that Money is on.
  • Account names in Money are less than 15 characters and contain no punctuation or symbols. To rename an account:
    1. Open Money's account list.
    2. Right-click the account and select Rename.
    3. Type in a unique account name, then press Enter.
  • Categories and classifications in Money are less than 15 characters and contain no punctuation or symbols. To rename a category or classification:
    1. From Money's More menu, choose Categories & Payees.
    2. Click Categories.
    3. Right-click the category and select Rename.
    4. Type in a unique category name, then press Enter.

Security and Other Tips

Congratulations, you've finished converting your Money data to Quicken! To ensure the security of your financial info, we strongly recommend that you do the following:

  1. Delete the Microsoft Money reports from your Desktop by right-clicking the reports and selecting Delete.
  2. Empty your recycle bin by double-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and selecting Empty Recycle Bin.
  3. Add a file password to your data file by selecting the Quicken File menu, selecting Passwords > File, and then following the on-screen instructions. Click the Help button for additional assistance.

Asset and liability accounts are automatically grouped with cash flow accounts in the Cash Flow/Banking Center. If you'd rather track them in the Property & Debt Center:

  1. In Quicken's Account Bar list, click the account to open it.
  2. Open the Overview:
    • Quicken 2008: Click the Overview button
    • Quicken 2004 – 2007: Click the Overview tab
  3. Click the Edit Account Details button.
  4. Click the Account Location drop-down arrow and select Property & Debt: Asset or Property & Debt: Liability, then click OK.

If you converted investment data and would like to download current investment quotes:

  1. From Quicken's Investing menu, choose Security List.
  2. Select the security, click Edit, enter the symbol in the Symbol field, and then click OK.
  3. From the Online menu, select One Step Update.
  4. Click the Download quotes, asset classes, headlines and alerts option, and click the Update Now button.

Got bonds? Although Quicken imports the cost basis and price values of bonds from Money, it tracks them somewhat differently. Quicken adjusts the number of shares in the Edit Shares Bought window to reflect the number of bonds you own and the number of shares in the Quicken Transaction List to reflect the correct total share information.
