The investment seeks current income consistent with what the manager believes to be prudent risk; its secondary objective is capital appreciation. The fund invests mainly in a combination of bonds and common stocks of U.S. and non-U.S. companies and in Putnam Absolute Return 700 fund, which is a Putnam mutual fund we refer to as the underlying fund. It also invests in other fixed-income securities, such as mortgage-backed investments, and invests in money market securities or affiliated money market funds for cash management. The fund allocates 40% in equity and 60% in fixed income.
